Liverpool will host Villarreal at Anfield for the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg match, Thursday (28/04/2022) at 12:30 midnight Indian time.
Liverpool advanced to the semifinals of the Champions League this season after eliminating Benfica with a 6-4 aggregate victory in the quarter-finals. The Reds won 3-1 over the Portuguese side in the first leg, then drew 3-3 in the second leg.
Liverpool itself is in a very good performance ahead of this match. Last week, Liverpool just won the Merseyside derby against Everton in the Premier League with a score of 2-0 through goals from Andrew Robertson and Divock Origi. The victory made Liverpool without defeat in their last 10 matches in all competitions (W8 D2 L0).
With his slick performance, of course, many are looking for Liverpool to beat Villarreal and even win the Champions League this season. However, Liverpool still shouldn't be big-headed considering Villarreal is a team full of surprises this season.
Villarreal's journey in the Champions League this season is not an easy one. Villarreal eliminated Juventus in the Round of 16 with a 4-1 aggregate and then eliminated Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 aggregate.
Villarreal itself is in good condition ahead of this match. In their last match, Villarreal was able to win over Valencia with a score of 2-0 in the midweek La Liga event through Arnaut Groeneveld's brace. The victory left Villarreal unbeaten in their last 5 matches (W3 D2 L0).
Liverpool and Villarreal have met twice so far, namely in the semi-finals of the 2015/16 Europa League. In that match, Liverpool managed to get rid of Villarreal with a 3-1 aggregate victory. Villarreal won the first leg over Liverpool 1-0 at the Estadio de la Cerámica, but in the second leg, Liverpool was able to come back and win 3-0 over Villarreal at Anfield.
